DARK SYMMETRIES | PS PROJECTSPACE | AMSTERDAM
27 NOVEMBER 2016 - 21 JANUARY 2017
Dark Symmetries brings together a cross section of international artists whose drawing practices intersect with the use of symmetry as a theme and formative device. Featuring Becc Orszag (Australia), Matt Feyld (Canada), Michelle Grabner (USA), Pieter Bijwaard (Netherlands), Riette Wanders (Netherlands) and Teo Treloar (Australia).
Becc Orszag's (Australia) Hyper-realistic mirrored landscapes confound the viewer with precisely rendered, yet impossible images of places that appear natural but which can never exist.
The hard-edge geometric drawings of Pieter Bijwaard (Netherlands) utilise repeated patterns in a symmetrical fashion to create works that at first glance seem fully non-objective but still hint towards natural phenomenon and inhabitable worlds.
Matt Feyld's (Canada) drawing practice is an exploration into measurement and proportion. His minimal compositions are delicately balanced to produce works of precise pictorial weight.
Materiality and an intense working process is the basis for Riette Wanders' (Netherlands) drawing practice. Shapes are worked and reworked in dense charcaol layers leading to a sense of contained, yet visceral, energy within her pictorial forms.
Teo Treloar (Australia) uses repetitive highly rendered figuartive imagery and abstract forms across numerous works to create a vauge narative that embodies a sense of paranoia or oppressiveness.
Michelle Grabner's (USA) drawings create a vortex like space, streaming lines rendered in silverpoint expand out from a central vanishing point generating a push and pull of glimmering pictorial space.
